The six nations of the Western Balkans—Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia—share a deeply rooted vinicultural history, yet each boasts unique regional specialties, largely dominated by the potent fruit brandy known as Rakija. This spirit, often home-distilled and exceeding $40\%$ ABV, is produced from nearly every fruit, with Šljivovica (plum brandy, popular in Serbia) and Lozovača (grape pomace) being the most common. Other specialties include Croatian Travarica and the bittersweet Pelinkovac liqueur. In wine, the powerful red grape Vranac (or Vranec) defines Montenegro and North Macedonia's bold style. Croatia is known for Dalmatian reds like Plavac Mali, Istria’s white Malvazija, and the red Teran (which it shares with Slovenia, particularly in the Istrian and Karst regions). Bosnia offers the structured red Blatina and white Žilavka, while Serbia showcases the ancient reds like Prokupac. Slovenia excels with cooler climate varietals, including the Karst region's famous red Teran.
